Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Isolation & K-Rated Transformers, electrical isolation, harmonic mitigation, transformer sizing, power quality, and application suitability.

An Isolation Transformer transfers electrical power from a source to a load while providing galvanic isolation, meaning there is no direct electrical connection between the primary (input) and secondary (output) windings. It uses electromagnetic induction through a common core to pass power, blocking DC components, noise, and fault currents from reaching the connected equipment.

The primary-to-secondary ratio is typically 1:1, so the output voltage equals the input voltage, although step-up and step-down configurations such as 2:1 or 1:2 are also available.

Isolation Transformers create complete electrical separation between the incoming supply and connected equipment.

This separation helps:

  • Reduce electrical shock hazards
  • Limit fault current propagation
  • Improve equipment protection
  • Reduce risk during maintenance activities

They are widely used wherever electrical safety is a critical requirement.

An Isolation Transformer provides electrical isolation and noise reduction.

A Servo Voltage Stabilizer regulates voltage fluctuations.

An Isolation Transformer does not correct voltage variations, while a Servo Stabilizer does not provide galvanic isolation.

Many installations use both products together.

Choose an Isolation Transformer when your primary concern is:

  • Electrical isolation
  • Ground loop elimination
  • Noise reduction
  • Equipment safety

Choose a Voltage Stabilizer when the primary concern is voltage fluctuation.

Sum the total rated wattage of all equipment to be connected, add 20–25% for future expansion, and divide by the power factor to determine the required KVA rating.

For loads with high inrush currents, such as motors and UPS systems, additional capacity may be required.

A K-Rated Transformer is a specially designed transformer intended to handle non-linear loads that generate harmonic currents. The K-Factor rating indicates how well the transformer can tolerate harmonic heating without exceeding its thermal limits.

A standard transformer (K-1) is designed for purely sinusoidal (linear) loads. Higher K-Factor ratings such as K-4, K-7, K-13, and K-20 indicate increasing ability to handle harmonic-rich currents without overheating or premature failure.

Any load that draws non-sinusoidal current can benefit from a K-Rated Transformer.

Common examples include:

  • Computers and servers
  • Data center infrastructure
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Variable Speed Drives (VSDs)
  • UPS systems
  • Electronic ballasts
  • LED lighting systems
  • Welding equipment
  • Arc furnaces
  • Medical imaging systems
  • Telecommunication equipment
  • Rectifier systems

V-Ctrl Isolation Transformers are engineered to provide:
